TACO BAR?!? Why didn’t I think of this? ¡Ay Dios, Mio!
Like GPSs, fanny packs and Twitter, a Taco Bar is a brilliant idea—the sort of place you didn’t realize Allston lacked until it suddenly exists right down the street. The sort that leaves you muttering, “Why didn’t I think of that?”
Thus, the new(ish) Lone Star Taco Bar located right next to Deep Ellum (the brains behind the operation) has struck gold, in the form of fluffy, fresh, homemade corn tortillas stacked with everything from chorizo to avocado, matched with mad spicy margaritas and more tequilas than years I’ve been alive.
My friends, this is heaven in a Taco Bar.
For what else do you want when brunch rolls around and you’re hungover from the night before, but tacos and margaritas? And what else do you want when you skipped lunch and are famished at 4pm, but tacos and margaritas? And friends… what else do you want (besides Bravo’s or Azama’s) when you leave the bar around midnight, but TACOS, and perhaps, a margarita?
Nothing, that’s what. And Lone Star serves its full menu every day from 11am- 1am, weekends 10 am to 1 am.
ALL OF YOUR PROBLEMS ARE SOLVED.
Each small plate, almost tapa-esque, is $3-$4, making it the perfect place to go for a date or in a small group, so everyone can try a bunch of different things. When you go, you HAVE TO GET THE GRILLED STREET CORN. You get three cobs, blackened and smothered with a thick layer of butter and cotija cheese.. and apparently chili lime aioli, the taste of which is overwrought completely by the gobs of gooey cheese and butter. But goddamn are those gobs good.
The tacos are each $4, with fluffy homemade tortillas filled to bursting with house made chorizo, carnitas pork, Dallas spicy beef, Baja Fish or Grilled avocado. I tried the grilled avocado, the sweet corn relish combined with a pancake of warm griddled queso and big chunk of avocado melts together into DELICIOSO in your mouth. Delicioso topped with cheese crumbles.
Margaritas are $10 so (dare I say it), “that’s how they get you.” But it’s worth it, for sure, and this is coming from someone who might have had only $40 to my name at the time. I tried the Lone Star Margarita (available in “Mug-a-rita” size, aka 20 oz) made with their Blanco Tequila. Not the spiciest one, but the drink still had a nice kick to it. If you like ‘em hot, go for the El Diablo, made with jalapeno and habanero agave syrup.
Here’s one final suggestion:
before you leave, get the Mexican Happy Meal.
For $10, you get a shot of tequila, a shot of sangrita (tomato-based) to chase it with, and then a pint of Modelo, which tastes as good as that day when you were a little kid and reached to the bottom of your Happy Meal to pull out the exact toy you were praying for.
Lone Star Taco Bar, te quiero.
